Το πλοίο μεταφοράς κοντέινερ των 9,962 TEU Dali προσέκρουσε σε γέφυρα μήκους 2.57 χιλιομέτρων στη Βαλτιμόρη περίπου 1:30 η ώρα το πρωί τοπική ώρα.
Μετά την πρόσκρουση κατέρρευσε η γέφυρα, ενώ το πλοίο τυλίχθηκε στις φλόγες και βυθίστηκε.
Σύμφωνα με τον υπεύθυνο επικοινωνίας του πυροσβεστικού σώματος της Βαλτιμόρης Kevin Catwiright, τουλάχιστον 7 άνθρωποι και αρκετά οχήματα έχουν πέσει στο νερό και εκφράζονται φόβοι για αρκετούς νεκρούς.
